MINISTER GRACES ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

The Minister for Public Works & Transport, Ps. Lindiwe Dlamini delivering her speech during a road safety awareness campaign at Matsapha, held at Matsapha Testing Station on the 16th July 2016, stated that the campaign is geared to transforming the Matsapha community to a safety complainant constituency. The campaign dubbed “Ungajubeli Utakufa” (don’t take short cuts, you will die) was hosted by the Swaziland Road Safety Stakeholders Alliance, where the Minister was the guest speaker.
Dlamini highlighted that despite the disruption in traffic flow, a passage of both motorists and pedestrians has been maintained at all costs, she commended the Road Safety Stakeholders for joining hands in ensuring that the fatal road crashes involving pedestrians along Matsapha – Manzini road are eradicated through the dissemination of road user knowledge.
The Minister noted that the Royal Swaziland Police Service had revealed appalling statistics on a sharp increase in road – pedestrian fatalities along Matsapha – Manzini road, and it is used by 8 000 vehicles per day.
Dlamini further lamented that some motorists are delayed and once they drive through the controlled areas, they tend to over – speed, to make up for the lost time, yet they pass through a densely populated area of about 41 000 people or more.
The Minister commended Kukhanya Civil Engineering Contractors for posting temporary warning signing signage as well as personnel to caution motorists. She further warned motorists not to take advantage of the gaps between the concrete barriers because motorists might not be in a position to see them. They are advised to use the foot bridges at eTeteni, eTeni, Logoba and KaKhoza, alternatively. They can also use the under pass at kaNdlunganye and Mhlaleni.
